OriginallyknownasBuckinghamHouse,thebuildingwhichformsthecoreoftoday'spalacewasalargetownhousebuiltfortheDukeofBuckinghamin1705onasitewhichhadbeeninprivateownershipforatleast150years.ItwassubsequentlyacquiredbyGeorgeIIIin1761asaprivateresidenceforQueenCharlotte,andknownas"TheQueen'sHouse".Duringthe19thcenturyitwasenlarged,principallybyarchitectsJohnNashandEdwardBlore,formingthreewingsaroundacentralcourtyard.BuckinghamPalacefinallybecametheofficialroyalpalaceoftheBritishmonarchontheaccessionofQueenVictoriain1837.Thelastmajorstructuraladditionsweremadeinthelate19thandearly20thcenturies,includingtheEastfrontwhichcontainsthewell-knownbalconyonwhichtheRoyalFamilytraditionallycongregatetogreetcrowdsoutside.However,thepalacechapelwasdestroyedbyaGermanbombinWorldWarII;theQueen'sGallerywasbuiltonthesiteandopenedtothepublicin1962toexhibitworksofartfromtheRoyalCollection.
Theoriginalearly19th-centuryinteriordesigns,manyofwhichstillsurvive,includedwidespreaduseofbrightlycolouredscagliolaandblueandpinklapis,ontheadviceofSirCharlesLong.KingEdwardVIIoversawapartialredecorationinaBelleÉpoquecreamandgoldcolourscheme.ManysmallerreceptionroomsarefurnishedintheChineseregencystylewithfurnitureandfittingsbroughtfromtheRoyalPavilionatBrightonandfromCarltonHouse.TheBuckinghamPalaceGardenisthelargestprivategardeninLondon.
